The standard was approved as an international ISO (ISO/IEC 16262) standard in 1998.

The development of the standard is still in progress.

What Can SQL do?

SQL is a Standard

  BUT….Although SQL is an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard, there are many different versions of the SQL language.

However, to be compliant with the ANSI standard, they all support at least the major commands (such as SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT, WHERE) in a similar manner.

Note: Most of the SQL database programs also have their own proprietary extensions in addition to the SQL standard!

Using SQL in Websites

To build a web site that shows some data from a database, you will need the following:

• An RDBMS database program (i.e. MS Access, SQL Server, MySQL)
• A server-side scripting language, like PHP or ASP
• SQL
• HTML / CSS

RDBMS

RDBMS stands for Relational Database Management System.

RDBMS is the basis for SQL, and for all modern database systems like MS SQL Server, IBM DB2, Oracle, MySQL, and Microsoft Access.

The data in RDBMS is stored in database objects called tables.

A table is a collections of related data entries and it consists of columns and rows.

The firm said that about 535,000 units of its F and C series ‘Vaio’ brand laptops are affected by the fault.

Sony has provided software on its website to update the laptops’ firmware which it claims should solve the problem.

Around 260,000 laptops in the US, 103,000 in Europe, 120,000 in South East Asia and 52,000 in Japan need to be fixed.

Sony said in a statement that there have been 39 overheating cases in total, all reported outside Japan.

Some of these have resulted in damage to the computer itself , but no burn injuries have been reported.

In the US, Sony has announced a recall of 233,000 notebook computers warning that overheating posed a ‘burn hazard’ to the consumer.

Some of Sony’s F and C series Vaio PCs made in January this year and some custom-made models from the same series have been affected, the company said.

A Sony spokeswoman said the company has not estimated possible costs stemming from the problem.

Editor of PC Pro magazine, Tim Danton told the BBC: ‘Laptops are particularly susceptible to overheating; hardly surprising when you are cramming so much hot running hardware into such a small space.

‘We don’t yet know how many people are actually suffering from overheating issues. So we don’t yet know how many people will actually return their laptops or patch their computer.

‘The only real risk to Sony is damage to their reputation, but that – like other recalls – swiftly diminishes over time.’

This is not the first time that Sony has been forced to recall some of its Vaio laptops. In 2008 the firm recalled 440,000 Vaio units after a flaw with the circuit board left a number of customers with minor burns.

Linguassist had built up a huge database of contacts which had become unwieldy, slow and time consuming to search.

So it worked with an IT firm to develop a new system combining its data with mapping software, allowing staff to pinpoint the nearest contractor to a client.

Linguassist’s managing director Graham Paton said the result was a bespoke system which saved staff time and the client money.

“The database has transformed the way we work,” he said. “With more than 1,600 qualified and accredited interpreters and translators on our books, it was important to speed up the process to find the right linguist for the clients’ requirements.

“It means we can offer a fast and efficient service and that’s very important when providing interpreters for the police, solicitors or probation workers.”

Linguassist asked Llangollen based IT-Pro Development to create the system and the two firms worked to perfect the software. Now called LinguaBase, the database is being made available to other companies.

David Pinel, technical director at IT-Pro Development, said: “The system is now semi-bespoke, meaning that with a few tweaks, it can be customised to suit other businesses.”

*NOTE* You  can upgrade from certain versions of Vista to certain versions of Windows 7 but not all versions do so you will have to do a clean install windows 7 so again make sure all your documents and files you want to keep are backed up on another drive or device. Once the drive has been wiped clean thats it! there is no way of reversing the process so you have been warned!

The Windows 7 install is quite straightforward compared to previous versions of windows and also the process is quite quick compared to other Windows versions so your new Windows 7 machine will be up and running in no time.

Right lets get started!To begin the install process you need to boot from CD/DVD so pop your Shiney new Windows 7 disc into the drive and we will begin.

1. Once the CD/DVD starts up you should get a message on the screen to “Press any key to boot from CD/DVD” If you do not get this message come up and it goes straight into booting up your current version of windows you need to restart your computer and go into the BIOS and change the Boot Sequence so that the DVD Rom is before the hard drive, save the options and exit.

2. Press a key to force the computer to boot from the Windows 7 DVD .

3. Let the computer load the files from the DVD this could take a few minutes. To keep your mind at rest dont worry no changes are being made to your computer at this point just loading files into it’s memory.

4.  Wait for  Windows setup to finish, Once all the files have been loaded into memory. Once they have installed you will see the Windows & start up splash screen,  The setup process will now begin.

5. Now we are ccoking and the fun will start. Choose the Language to install, Time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you’d like to use in your new Windows 7 installation. Click Next.

6. Click on the Install now button in the center of the screen, under the Windows 7 logo.

*NOTE* ONLY If you’re performing a clean install of Windows 7 as a solution to a major problem but have not yet tried a Startup Repair, do that first. It could save you the trouble of completing this clean install process.  Otherwise click Install Now.

7. Time to go make a cuppa while the startup process is starting

8. Read through the agreement, check the I accept the license terms checkbox under the agreement text and then click Next to confirm that you agree with the terms.

9. Next choose the type of installation you want to complete but in most cases the upgrade option will be disabled as we said earlier and also you will get better performances from a fresh install. Click Custom (Advance)

10. Next up is the Drive Options screen, The main difference in a Windows 7 clean install verses other kinds of Windows 7 installation methods is that a clean install involves the removal of all operating system related partitions. Choose the partition you wish to use for the Windows 7 install and click delete. Once that Partition has been deleted and all other OS have been removed Choose the appropriate unallocated space to install Windows 7 on and then click Next.

11. Now here comes the boring bit! Windows 7 Setup will now install a clean copy of Windows 7 to the location you chose in the previous step. You don’t need to do anything here but wait.

12. During the setup process your computer will need to re start a few times when the screen pops up saying the computer will restart in 10 seconds you can click the re start now button at the bottom if you would rather not wait.

13.  You will now see the Windows splash screen from before while setup continues. then we get into the final few stages of the install with the updating of registry settings.

14. Wait while Windows 7 Setup starts various necessary services. This starting of services will occur during every Windows 7 boot as well but you won’t see it like this again. Services start in the background during a normal Windows 7 startup.

15. This last Windows 7 Setup screen says “Completing installation” and may take several minutes. All you need to do is wait YAWN!!!!

16. Your computer needs to restart one more time.

17. Windows 7 will now start and configure the computer for first use. loading of drivers and everything has been installed correctly etc.

18. Now it’s time to pick a username, password and a name for your computer.  You can use the same details as your old OS if you would like. When chosen click Next.

19.  Now enter the product key that came with your copy of windows 7. It will be found inside the case. also check the box that says Automaticly activate windows when im online.

*NOTE* If your computer came with windows 7 and this is a re install the product key can be found on the side or the bottom of your computer.

20. I recommend that you choose Install important updates only. This option is the safest because it restricts Windows 7 from doing anything with your data or to your computer automatically except when important security and stability updates are available. But feel free to use recomended settings if you wish.

21. On the Review your time and date settings screen, choose the correct Time zone, Date, and Time.

22.  In the Select your computer’s current location window you see now, Windows 7 is asking where your computer is located at so it can setup the proper network security – tighter security for public areas and lighter for private ones like home and work.

23.  We are now in the home straight! Windows 7 will now put all the “finishing touches” on your clean installation like adding icons to the desktop, prepare the start menu, etc. Sit back and relax!

24. Tadaa!! there is your new shiney installed operating system. Congratulations and enjoy windows 7

The site will offer two petabytes (2,000 gigabytes) of video streaming bandwidth which, according to Fifa.com, is twice the storage required to render the recent movie blockbuster Avatar.

“Slough was the natural choice for Fifa.com to house its additional bandwidth requirements. The state-of-the-art venue offers security and will ensure rapid delivery of the online experience to fans,” said Matt Stone, head of new media at Fifa,

From Slough, Fifa.com will be distributed globally to tens of thousands of servers which then send content to users from the closest location via a content delivery network, which aims to reduce network latency, by pushing the web pages closers to where users are accessing them.

Dell has officially revealed the Streak, a five-inch tablet it plans to bring to market this summer. The streak will run Android, feature multitouch display, and be capable of making phone calls. Information about the streak first appeared about a month ago when the gadget blog Engadget published leaked data on it and other Dell mobile devices

Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) on Tuesday announced that its upcoming Streak mobile device will be available in the United Kingdom in June, and in the U.S. later this summer.

The Streak, which runs on the Android mobile OS, is “a hybrid device that lies in the space between a smartphone and other larger tablets or netbooks,” according to Dell executive Lionel Menchaca.

“The Dell Streak brings together a great Web browsing experience, multitasking capability, slick turn-by-turn navigation, and a great way to enjoy your photos, movies and music into a sleek device that’s built for mobility,” Menchaca said.

Despite the Streak’s apparent similarities with the Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad, Dell officials downplayed such comparisons.

“I wouldn’t position it against the iPad; while we do share some common features, the Streak also offers phone features,” Dell spokesperson Matthew Parretta told TechNewsWorld. “The Streak’s a data-centric device with voice capabilities that’s designed to be an extremely small, portable, and still give the real Web experience you can’t get on a three-inch-screen device.”

Facebook is still a big deal, with more than 400 million users, but its future will hinge to a large extent on whether it is right about social norms. If the company doesn’t properly respect wishes for data control and a better option surfaces, it will eventually be left in the dust — like so many other “big” tech outfits that no longer make headlines.

This week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg promised users that better solutions for privacy concerns will be released soon. It’s the young executive’s most recent attempt to quell anger over the company’s decisions to force users to delete information if they wish to keep it private and to automatically share some data with third parties. Such moves have sparked outrage from many, and while all outrage might be equal, the strategies for dealing with Facebook are not. 

One response to Facebook’s data changes is to have the government regulate it. For instance, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) researcher and Berkman Center fellow Danah Boyd has written that “Facebook is trying to be a utility; utilities get regulated.”  

As much as Boyd’s proposed solution might be heartfelt, it falls prey to the “using a hammer to kill a fly” analogy. Bringing in regulators might stop specific practices, but it would also kill the service. Can you imagine government bureaucrats trying to decide which features Facebook should allow? Government software design is about as good an idea as government-run coffee shops. Would anyone hang out there for long? Nope — we’ll all be down at Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX), using Twitter instead. And that brings us to the other options to deal with Facebook’s admittedly annoying changes to its service.

What is CSS?

HTML was never intended to contain tags for formatting a document.

HTML was intended to define the content of a document, like:

<h1>This is a heading</h1>

<p>This is a paragraph.</p>

When tags like <font>, and color attributes were added to the HTML 3.2 specification, it started a nightmare for web developers. Development of large web sites, where fonts and color information were added to every single page, became a long and expensive process.

To solve this problem, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created CSS.

In HTML 4.0, all formatting could be removed from the HTML document, and stored in a separate CSS file.

All browsers support CSS today.

CSS defines how HTML elements are to be displayed.

Styles are normally saved in external .css files. External style sheets enable you to change the appearance and layout of all the pages in a Web site, just by editing one single file!

The syntax

 A CSS rule has two main parts a Selector and one or even more Declerations below is an example of a CSS rule:

Each of the Declerations have a propety and a value, the property is the attribute you want to change such as font style, color, size, position etc each of these properties have a value.

In addition to setting a style for a HTML element, CSS allows you to specify your own selectors called “id” and “class”.

The id selector is used to specify a style for a single, unique element.

The id selector uses the id attribute of the HTML element, and is defined with a “#”.

The style rule below will be applied to the element with id=”para1″:

The class selector is used to specify a style for a group of elements. Unlike the id selector, the class selector is most often used on several elements.

This allows you to set a particular style for any HTML elements with the same class.

The class selector uses the HTML class attribute, and is defined with a “.”

In the example below, all HTML elements with class=”para2″ will be center-aligned:

Carpet bomb attack hole fixed for Safari on Windows, but not on Mac OS X

Two years after fixing a security bug in the Windows version of its Safari browser, Apple apparently has decided that Mac users can go without a fix.

Apple was initially unimpressed by Nitesh Dhanjani’s work developing what’s known as a “carpet bomb” attack, the security researcher said in an interview Monday. “I told Apple about it two years ago, and they responded back, saying it was more of an annoyance than anything else.”

That turned out to be the wrong assessment. Soon after Dhanjani went public with the flaw in May 2008, another security researcher showed how carpet bombing could be combined with another Windows attack to run unauthorised software on a Windows PC. Apple then shipped a fix for Safari on Windows, but not for Safari on Mac OS X.

Nobody has shown how to do this on the Mac OS X version of Safari, but Dhanjani still thinks Apple should fix the issue on both platforms.

In a carpet bomb attack, the victim visits a malicious Web site, which then starts downloading unauthorized files to the victim’s computer without any sort of approval.

“[W]hile most sane web browsers warn the end user and ask for explicit permission before saving a file locally, Safari goes ahead and saves the file into the default download location without asking the user,” he said in a blog posting, “even if hundreds of files are served up by the malicious website simultaneously.”

Without conducting another attack, hackers still have no way to run the files on the victim’s computer, but these unauthorized downloads still represent a security risk, Dhanjani said. “In this day and age … the site shouldn’t be able to drop anything it wants into my downloads folder.”

Not everyone agrees, however. Noted Apple hacker Charlie Miller said that Dhanjani’s bug is not serious because there is no second Mac OS X bug that causes downloaded files to be executed.

“So basically, a website can start to download a bunch of files to your Downloads directory. This isn’t an ideal situation, but then again, I don’t see a lot of harm that comes from it,” he said in an email interview. “Especially, if the alternative is for the browser to nag me every time I want to download something.”

Dhanjani believes Apple hasn’t fixed the issue because it might annoy Mac users. “They’re going after usability,” he said. “Apple wants to make everything so seamless that they don’t want the user to have to go through this extra process.”

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story. The company typically does not comment on security issues.

In a May 2008 email message to Dhanjani, viewed by the IDG News Service, Apple’s security team said it would consider adding an “Ask me before downloading anything” preference to Safari. “This will require a review with the Human Interface team,” Apple told the researcher. “We want to set your expectations that this could take quite a while, if it ever gets incorporated.”

I am a Spanish student, I have studied Computer Systems. I could learn network maintenance, designing and programming web pages, database maintenance, etc. I want to be a good programmer who can program in any language.

I’m lucky to be in this company working for these three months I’m going to be in UK. Brazil is emerging as an IT powerhouse, with attention from all the big names in tech such as Microsoft, Google and Intel.

It’s not just the world’s number one producer of coffee, sugar and ethanol. It’s not just one of the ten largest oil reserves in the world. And although you’ll find poverty and luxury almost side by side, it’s not just another developing country.

Over the last few years Brazil has been quietly turning itself into something of an IT powerhouse. “You can look at Brazil as one of the top global IT centres,” claims Sergio Pessoa, marketing director of the Brazilian Association of IT and Communication Companies (BRASSCOM).

Certainly the list of research centres is a roll call for the technology industry: Microsoft, Google – which has both its operations and engineering centres for Latin America there – IBM, Cisco, Lenovo, Sun, Intel, SAP, Motorola, Accenture and even India’s Tata sit beside home-grown success stories like the Lua scripting language and ERP supplier TOTUS.

Connecting up Brazil

The country has the fifth largest population in the world and the tenth largest economy, with low inflation, falling unemployment and a growing middle class.

“For years Brazil was borrowing,” Sergio Rezende, Brazil’s minister of science and technology told IT PRO. “Now it is lending money to the IMF to help solve the Greek problems.”

That helps make Brazil itself one of the fastest-growing markets for technology; it’s already the eighth largest market for IT worldwide. A few years ago Intel was touting programs to help families buy PC on a pay-as-you-go monthly plan and the government was building ‘telecentros’ – community centres with PCs you could walk in and use freely – in poor areas of Sao Paolo.

Now Brazil is the fifth largest market for PCs. With 12 million PCs sold in 2009 and a predicted 14 million this year, it’s ahead of Germany, although only 25 per cent of households have a PC. Mobile phones have reached almost 100 per cent saturation.

Think of Brazil online and you think of how Brazilians famously swamped Google’s Orkut social network some years ago – which may be why Microsoft chose Steve Ballmer’s speech on cloud computing in Sao Paolo to announce the new social network aggregation features in Windows Live Messenger.

Brazil was also one of the first countries to adopt online banking, online tax filing and e-voting. Broadband penetration has been low; Brazil’s 63 million internet users are 33 per cent of the population and in 2008 only 11 million of them had broadband, but the numbers are growing fast – around 15 per cent a year – and the government-backed National Broadband Plan to install broadband access across Brazil could be one of the largest infrastructure rollouts in the world.

There are also two spectrum auctions planned for this year, including the 2.5GHz band that could be used for LTE by the end of 2010.

Although the 2007 OECD report into IT competitiveness put Brazil in 43rd place – behind Greece, Romania and South Africa – broadband access and IT skills have both become more widespread since then.

After EMC’s annual conference in Boston last week championing the way of the private cloud for business, we take a look at whether this is the best option or if public is the way to go.

Last year, people were still arguing over definitions of cloud computing, but this year the technology has gained momentum.

From the hardware top cats through to the security bigwigs, the vast majority of the tech community is getting on board and bringing out their own products to tackle any obstacles the new model might face.

Yet one fight still rages on: public or private?

Public

The public cloud is essentially outsourcing your data centre. An external company offers up its data centre for rent and you can chose the number of servers or the amount of storage you want to run out there, as well as the applications. You can then access it remotely from a PC.

The key selling point of this model is cost savings. Not only does it mean you don’t have to pay for all the hardware yourself, but you don’t have to pay for the maintenance and staffing costs as well.

There is also a widely adopted “pay as you go” model with public clouds, allowing you to rent the space from as little as an hour – often used by developers testing applications – up to months or years but paying by the month rather than in a big lump sum.

The public cloud space is dominated by players like Amazon and Google, although smaller companies like Elastic Hosts are getting in on the act too whilst firms like Salesforce.com offer the ability to run a single application in the cloud.

Private

The private cloud adds more of a personal touch to the proceedings. Many companies, especially larger institutions like banks or the public sector, are concerned about the security of letting what could be very confidential information out from behind their own firewall.

This model keeps all of your physical hardware within your own location, meaning the day to day running of the systems, maintenance, and – most importantly – security aspects, are run in house.

However, it is a highly virtualised environment, using extra software to optimise your hardware to its fullest potential and ease the transactions of data and information between servers both in one office or to other locations your company might have.

EMC is a large advocate of this but many of the other hardware vendors such as HP, IBM and Dell offer software solutions and specifically designed products to cope with the new environment.

Pros and cons

Both are accepted and workable models but they also come with their own positives and negatives to contend with.

“Businesses that use public clouds can… enjoy the benefits that come with any large scale deployment such as highly available, enterprise class infrastructure, but at a fraction of the cost,” Rob Lovell, chief executive of ThinkGrid .

As previously mentioned, a company would not have to front up the costs for all the servers, storage, or cables to link them up. Even more than that, they would not have to pay for the staff to keep the data centre running in perfect order.

Also when you sign up to fit out your data centre with all the products you need, companies can end up locked in and stuck with those products for a very long time.

The pay as you go model adopted within the public cloud means if you aren’t happy with the service you are receiving there is no such thing as vendor lock in and you can jump ship at any time – but only if such clouds work on the same standards and are interoperable.

 Hi there! My name is Ian and im luckily enough to work for IT-PRO. I started 2 years ago now after 5 years as a Duty Manager in my local Somerfield. The time was right to move on and get into what I love most Computers.

When I first came to IT-PRO i had no experience apart from the little i did back in college. Every day is a learning day and to be honest its just grat fun to work alongside David and learning from him. I feel I have come quite a way in the 2 years but there is a long long way to go yet.

Hi, I thought that it would be nice to introduce you to our team so that if you are ever lucky enough to meet with us you ‘ll know who your talking to..

I’ll start off with myself. My name is David Pinel and i’ve been knocking out some wonderful software systems for about 8 years now. I first started off after changing career from a hairdresser to learning how to program in VB6 (Visual Basic programming language for those not in the know) it was a wonderful time full of mystery, i was amazed at how those little boxes sat on my desk to could do all the wonderful things they do.

After years of learning and more learning the mystery had gone (ish) and i had started work in manchester (UK) for a lovely company who helped to develop my skills even further.

But the time came for me to branch out on my own. So after sitting down with a good friend of mine (and several bottles of wine) we decided to start up a company using both of our skills.

IT-Pro was born and on 1st september 2003 we opened up the office in Llangollen, North Wales and got down to business. I’d love to say that we were an overnight success but i’d be lying to you. we have worked very very hard over the past 7 years to create the company we have now.

My role in the company varies from day to day, sometimes i’m developing cutting edge software and then others i’m making the teas (not so often now though since ian started, his tea isn’t great but hey you can’t have everything).

My main area is in .NET development (C#) i am very comfortable in either web or application based environments and have an excellent proven track record in both, not being one to toot my own horn but TOOT i will.

This little post will show you how to add more memory to your computer.

First of all here are some quick facts about RAM

RAM = random access memory. According to Microsoft Encarta, it is the primary working memory in a computer used for the temporary storage of programs and data and in which the data can be accessed directly and modified.

RAM is measured in bytes. 1 gigabyte (GB) = 1024 megabytes (MB) = 1,048,576 kilobytes (KB)

Before you start buying memory you need to know a couple of things: How many RAM modules you have and what type of  memory you have?

 To find out how much RAM you have currently you can right click on “My Computer” on any version of windows and select properties this will give you the details of your computer including how much RAM you have. Alternatively you can visit  http://www.crucial.com/ and do a scan of your computer and they will tell you how much RAM you have, what type of memory you have, if you have any free unused slots in your machine and a list of options of memory you can buy direct from them. Doing this method saves time and makes sure you select and buy the correct type of RAM for your machine.

Installing your new RAM

We are now going to show you how to install the RAM into your machine:

1.  Turn off your PC, unplug it from the wall, and open the case. We suggest wearing an antistatic wrist strap when you work inside your computer. The RAM slots are usually located near the CPU, but closer to the front of the case.
2. If all your RAM slots are filled, you’ll need to remove some of the old modules. Two clips hold each DIMM in its socket. Push down on the clips to open them, rock the modules gently, and lift them straight out of the slots.
3. Note the notches on your DIMMs–they ensure that the modules can be inserted only one way. Put new DIMMs in the lowest-numbered empty slots first. Carefully press them straight down into the slots, applying gradually increasing pressure. The clips will snap into place when the DIMMs are fully inserted.
4. Plug in your PC, turn it on, and see if it recognizes the new RAM. If not, or if your PC won’t start, turn it off, unplug it, and make sure each DIMM is firmly seated. If you had to remove cables to get at the RAM, make sure they’re reconnected.

There you have it your PC should now be back up and running with fresh new memory.
